The Georgia Bounty Runners (www.gbr4wd.com) in collaboration with Life South have put on “Blood Drives” to collect blood donations for the Atlanta area.
From the first year, we’ve been Life South’s largest private donation event of the year. We plan for this year to be no exception. (Click on the year to get more details of that specific event) In 2004, our inaugural event, we collected 84 pints of blood and enjoyed terrific weather In 2005, we were tested by the weather. During the blood drive, we had rain, sleet, snow, hail, and 45+ mph winds. Despite that, we still collected 96 pints of blood for the Atlanta area. In 2006, we were once again thrown a curve by Mother Nature. The early morning of the event greeted us with a batch of tornados. We received many calls from people we expected to show that said they simply couldn’t get there. Still, we collected 103 pints of blood. In 2007, we again had a few issues with weather, it was hot, real hot, we had sunshine for most of the day, except for the thunderstorm we had when we were breaking down. But we also collected 139 good units of blood. In addition to the blood drive, the items donated to the Silent Auction and items provided by Omix-Ada’s “Garage Sale” brought in an additional $2100. These funds helped provide sizable donations to the Jennifer Scott Memorial Fund for the March of Dimes, Breast Cancer Research and to our own AED fund.
In 2008, Saturday, May 10th, was a beautiful sunny day with just enough of a breeze to make it really nice in the shade. And of course the buses were well air conditioned. Thanks in large part to our wonderful sport, this year was wildly successful in that we had 146 donations at this year's event. Again, for the fifth year straight, we've surpassed the previous year. The local clubs represented at this event were: Georgia Bounty Runners, Southern Jeeps, Georgia Crawlers,Georgia Rock Rods, Off Camber, and Soloros.
In 2009, Saturday, April 25th, 2009 was a bright and sunny day, one of the first hot days of the year. We were all set up at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, with 5 LifeSouth blood buses that were well air conditioned. Mud 4 Blood 6 had an impressive amount of sponsor support we had. Tony headed up this event and he did a great job organizing everything. Several clubs came out to show their support for a worthy cause. Southern Jeeps provided food for everyone, while others sold baked good for Rescue Tellico. There were many rigs in the truck show and it was very popular with the crowd. Although it was a bit warm turn-out was good and Life South had plenty of Blood Mobiles on site to make the wait to donate minimal. The kids were kept entertained with a "moonwalk" and several games. There was also a silent auction and a scratch and dent sale. The raffle had to be one of the best we have ever seen, sponsors came through with gift certificates to tow straps and more. 4Wheel Parts was there with their parts truck and Hooters was there with their girls. Dixie speedway had a great location and helped with whatever was needed. All in all it was a good experience and shows what people can do for a great cause. We had over 100 donations this day and had a very successful event.
Blood donations are incredibly important because each pint of blood can be separated into its three basic components, Plasma, Platelets, and Red Blood Cells. Each pint has the potential of helping three different people. Over the 6 years, we’ve collected almost 668 pints of blood. That in turn has the potential of helping almost 2000 people in need.
To get people to turn out, we have food, games, a silent auction, tons and tons of give-a-ways, and a raffle specifically for the people that at least attempt to give blood. Last year there were nearly $10,000 worth of raffle prizes and give-a-ways at the event. Most of the organized Atlanta 4wd clubs participate and assist us with the promotion of this event.
